Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol made from glucose, usually from corn or wheat starch. In toothpaste it keeps the paste soft in the tube and gives a mild sweetness; in creams and lotions it holds water like glycerin. CosIng lists it as a humectant and skin conditioning agent.
