What it does

Hydroxyethylcellulose is cellulose from wood pulp made water-soluble. It thickens without turning cloudy or sticky, so it is common in clear gels, micellar waters, shampoos and hair styling gels. CosIng lists it as binding, emulsion stabilising, film forming and viscosity controlling.

It is plant-derived and affects none of the six checks.
