What it does

Hexylene glycol is a synthetic liquid used in small amounts to dissolve actives, reduce thickness and support the preservative system, most often in cleansers, micellar waters and sunscreens.

CosIng lists it as solvent, emulsifying and skin conditioning. It is a glycol, not an alcohol the alcohol-free check looks for, and it affects none of the six checks.

  • solvent: Dissolving other components of cosmetics. Solvents are usually liquids (aqueous and nonaqueous).
  • surfactant - cleansing: Wetting body surfaces, emulsifying or solubilizing oils, and suspending soil (generally, such ingredients contribute to the foaming and lathering properties of cleansing products).
