What it does

Alcohol denat is ethanol with a bitter additive so it cannot be drunk. Formulators use it to dissolve fragrance, to make a product feel light and to help it dry fast. It is common in toners, perfumes, hair sprays and some sunscreens.

It is the ingredient the alcohol-free check is about. Fatty alcohols such as Cetearyl Alcohol are unrelated and never count.

Functions: solvent, astringent
